About Bosque Estatal de Carite

Bosque Estatal de Carite is one of Puerto Rico’s key protected forest areas, covering a mountainous region in the municipalities of Cayey, Guayama, Patillas, and San Lorenzo. This tropical rainforest is characterized by rolling hills, deep valleys, freshwater streams, and diverse plant and animal species, including endemic flora such as tabonuco and Sierra palm trees. Established in 1937, the forest plays a vital role in watershed protection and harboring wildlife, including native birds like the Puerto Rican tody and broad-winged hawk. The forest offers multiple hiking trails with scenic lookouts, waterfalls, and tranquil picnic sites. Popular activities include hiking through its richly vegetated trails like the popular Zoar Trail, camping in designated areas, and engaging in wildlife and bird watching. The forest’s cooler mountain climate provides relief from coastal heat, making it a favorite outdoor destination year-round. Visitor appeal lies in its combination of natural beauty, well-maintained trails, and peaceful solitude. A network of scenic roads leads visitors to trailheads and viewpoints, with opportunities for nature photography and ecological exploration. The forest also holds cultural significance tied to indigenous Taíno heritage and local history. Visitors can experience a mix of adventure and relaxation amid Puerto Rico’s lush mountain terrain.
